Projected Futures for the Commons in Dubai

Dubai is a city that has evolved through rapid transformation. It is unique among world cities in many ways, not least of which is in terms of a population with only 10% United Arab Emirates citizenship. As a point of comparison, the World Migration Report notes that Brussels has the next largest imbalance between expatriates and citizens, with citizens comprising 38% of the city’s population. In keeping with the Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism’s focus on an urban future of radical social, ecological, and technical transformation, Projected Futures for the Commons in Dubai presents a series of proposals that considers what can be common in a city defined by diversity. The exhibition, comprised of proposals by an emerging generation of architects and designers, is a critical examination of the challenges and possibilities associated with expatriate existences.
